  1. Please give you own comments about Ethnocentrism in Indonesia.

Ethnocentrism is based on the ideas and beliefs of one particular culture and using these to judge other culture. Basically I think each person sometimes has a kind of like selfish, which is why Ethnocentrism happens in culture or even ourselves but of course it’s not good, every culture has uniqueness itself. We don’t have any right to judge whether it is good or not.

  1. Please give your comments about global diffusion in Indonesia!

 Global diffusion, sometimes it’s good but sometimes it’s not really. If we put the examples are Lawson, Sefel or sort of like that – I don’t really much care about. Okay it’s good, quite modern, cozy to hang out with friends but if there weren’t any Lawson and friends – who cares? I also would say, global diffusion also make how modern the city or country is. People ultimately think the city is modern if there’s something in America or Europe also exist in the here

  1. Please give your own comment about cultural lag in Indonesia.  

I think Culture lag in Indonesia is spreading rapidly. Indonesians mostly young people get easily to  accept a new culture that they think ‘it’s modern and simple’. When somebody else still keeps what they used to have – then they will get comments that ‘you are old fashion’ or something like that. In fact they get influenced with the others. Personally I think, it is quite good following such a ‘modern thing’ in our life but without leaving which something that we have had. It all about memories, for example a letter – I think in another day we have been leaving it, now people usually use SMS, BBM, Skype, WA or something modern like that. Okay they are quite easy to use, simple and fast but as I said before there is no memories left then because each system in each program will refresh automatically so that means we cannot back to see or read a past memory. In latter, we can read over and over again, it is might quite old but it is still sweet – I would say.

  1. What parts of our material culture reflect culture diffusion?
  2. Please give three examples of Ethnocentrism!

      Answer:
  1.       Interaction culture is probably reflected as culture diffusion.
  2.     I still quite remember what the lecturer spoke in the class. Ethnocentrism is based on the ideas and beliefs of one particular culture and using these to judge other culture. For example, in America in many years before now – people differ whether they are black or white people. Black people get discrimination by the white people, the white people assume that they are much better than them – white people also called that the black people are Negro. Then now I think there is no longer any discrimination in there, black or white people can live together. Even in several cases there are white people married with black people or now many black people become singers, rappers, actors, actresses and they get appreciated by many people.And I remember when I watched an Indonesian film; it’s called Ayat Ayat Cinta. There is a scene where two American visited Egypt – when they got in into the train then some people in the train looked them sarcastically, even local people didn’t allow them to sit. The local people think American is such a heathen. So I think it’s one of examples of Ethnocentrism. Even ethnocentrism happens in our social life. Javanese sometimes they think they are better. They are friendly, nice, hard working (I’m Javanese hahaha) so yeah maybe sometimes I think there is no better tribe besides Javanese. Peace! Hehehe

  1. What are the similarities or the differences between Ethnocentrism and Cultural Relativism? 
  2. Please give three examples of cultural shocks!
Answers; 
  1. Answer: for the most part, there is very little there is similar between these ideas. The only major similarity they share is the fact that they are both meant as ways to evaluate and judge culture.  
  2. I've got the idea about cultural shocks. First when we (as an Asian) come to any western country, we might probably get cultural shocks because the culture in Asia and American or even Europe is completely different. For example, in America we often see people kiss in everywhere, perhaps it has been common for American but for us, it is quite awkward to see somebody else kiss in Public Square. I've ever seen in film when American visit China, as an American – he got cultural shock when saw some vendors street selling insets as a food. It’s not quite like that, even the insects are still alive and he got shock seeing this case – then probably it could be one of the cultural shocks. I've also ever watched a program on a television; it was showing a place in Indonesia (I don’t quite remember where it is exactly) but in that show, presenting a tribe where they usually get their finger cut off when one of their children died. Well it means if there’s one of their children passed away, they should cut on of their finger. I heard it is a represented as a sorrow and sadness.

What is Pluralism?
Pluralism is a framework in which there is interaction of several groups that show a sense of mutual respect and tolerance of each other. They live together and in the absence of conflicts of assimilation. In other words, in the social interaction everybody needs build up a sense of pluralistic to make a community lives in peaceful. As a societies modernize, pluralistic society attract people from countries where there may be economic hardship, political unrest or religious persecution.

Are Pluralistic and Multicultural Similar?
The main reference for the establishment of a multicultural society Indonesia is multiculturalism, an ideology that recognizes and magnify differences in equality both individually and culturally. The term multiculturalism actually recently become the object of discussion in many circles, but quickly evolved as an object is an interesting debate to be studied and discussed. At first this is also known as pluralism referring to ethnic and cultural diversity in a region or country.
Sometimes evidence is the emergence of pluralistic and multicultural ethnic divisions, cultural and ethnic groups in the nation of our own bodies. As the conflict in the East-East, in Aceh, Ambon, and others. The Indonesian people who we all know has a variety of cultures brought about by many tribes, customs scattered throughout the archipelago. Indonesia therefore formulate the concept of multiculturalism with the motto "Unity in Diversity". A concept that implies exceptional. Both meanings are explicitly or implicitly. Then also the emergence of the Youth Pledge in 1928, which is an awareness of the need to realize the difference at the same time also meant to foster unity.

What the Advantageous and Disadvantageous of Equality?
The advantageous, there is no one group which officially considered more influential than another. For example put a legal quote on how many Japanese Indonesians may run for public office or how many Chinese Indonesians can live on certain street. But however, the disadvantageous is powerful informal mechanisms, such as prejudice and discrimination, work to keep many groups out of the political process or out of certain neighborhoods.

Contoh Kerjasama, Akomodasi, Asimilasi & Akulturasi

Ketika kita udah deal dengan konsep sosial dan budaya, yang artinya budaya akan tercipta jika ada sosial dan di situ pula terjadinya interaksi sosial. Lantas bagaimana contoh contoh dari kategori interaksi sosial seperti Kerjasama, Akomodasi, Asimilasi dan Akulturasi? Let's we find out!

Kerjasama adalah suatu usaha bersama antara orang perorangan atau sekelompok untuk mencapai tujuan bersama. Manusia memang mahluk sosial, mereka selalu membutuhkan satu sama lain.  Mungkin dari sini pula terciptanya kerjasama, ambilah contoh sederhana ketika perayaan 17 agustusan di sebuah desa. Umumnya dalam perayaan hari kemerdekaan sebuah negara, para warga menciptakan berbagai kegiatan untuk memperingati hari tersebut - seperti halnya di Indonesia. Dan salah satu perayaan yang umum ketika 17an adalah Panjat Pinang. Dari permainan Panjat Pinang itu kita bisa jadikan salah satu contoh bentuk kerjasama - untuk menggapai/mengambil beberapa hadiah yang di taruh di atas pinang tentunya kita harus membutuhkan kerjasama karena engga mungkin satu orang bisa langsung manjat ke atas tanpa bantuan yang lain. Maka dari itu, Panjat Pinang adalah salah satu contoh bentuk budaya kerjasama yang terjadi di lingkungan sehari hari.

Akomodasi adalah suatu proses penyesuaian sosial dalam interaksi antara pribadi dan kelompok-kelompok manusia untuk meredakan pertentangan. Di lihat dari pengertian tersebut, kita bisa mengambil contoh bahwa musyawarah adalah salah satu bentuk budaya dalam meredakan pertentangan. Memang pertentangan itu suatu hal yang wajar dalam lingkungan sosial tapi masalahnya bagaimana menyelesaikan pertantangan itu? Oleh sebab itu, ada nya musyawarah untuk meredakan pertentangan tersebut. Mendengarkan dan menggabungkan pendapat yang berbeda dalam bermusyawarah bisa menghasilkan suatu kesepakan yang mufakat. Di Indonesia sendiri, musyawarah sudah menjadi tradisi untuk menyelesaikan masalah, khususnya di lingkungan masyarakat. 

Asimilasi adalah proses yang timbul bila ada kelompok masyarakat dengan latar belakang kebudayaan yang berbeda, saling bergaul secara intesif dalam jangka waktu lama, sehingga lambat laun kebudayaan asli mereka akan berubah sifat dan wujudnya membentuk kebudayaan baru sebagai kebudayaan campuran. Ambilah contoh ketika sebuah keluarga Indonesia pindah ke Amerika. Walaupun mereka masih berbicara Indonesia pada tiap anggota keluarga namun mau tidak mau mereka pun harus menyesuaikan bahasa di lingkungan baru mereka, yaitu bahasa Inggris. Mungkin beberapa dari mereka menjadi lancar berbahasa Inggris, begitu juga nantinya turunan mereka menjadi billingual dan kemungkinan puluhan taun kemudian ketika mereka sudah mendiami tempatnya begitu lama, lambat laun mereka pun akan semakin jarang berbicara bahasa asli mereka.
Akulturasi adalah proses sosial yang timbul apabila suatu kelompok masyarakat manusia dengan suatu kebudayaan tertentu dihadapkan dengan unsur - unsur dari suatu kebudayaan asing sedemikian rupa sehingga lambat laun unsur - unsur asing itu diterima dan diolah ke dalam kebudayaan sendiri tanpa menyebabkan hilangnya kepribadian dari kebudayaan itu sendiri.

Ketika berbicara akulturasi banyak sekali yang bisa diambil contoh di Indonesia ini, banyak sekali budaya barat masuk dan ada sebagian diterima namun ada juga beberapa yang tidak diterima karena tidak cocok dengan tradisi adat ketimuran kita. Tarulah contoh beberapa makanan barat yang masuk ke Indonesia, ada pizza, fried chicken, humburger, spaghetti dan lain lain. Meskipun begitu banyak restaurant cepat saji atau fast food yang berlebel dari barat namun masih banyak juga rumah rumah makan khas Indonesia yang tentunya menyajikan berbagai masakan Indonesia, seperti rumah makan padang, jawa, sunda dan lainya. Ini menunjukan bahwa memang ada terjadinya akulturasi di Indonesia namun itu tidak mengakibatkan budaya kita sendiri luntur. Budaya kita masih dan akan tetap ada walaupun diserbu beberapa budaya asing yang datang.
Demikian contoh - contoh dari kerjasama, akomodasi, asimilasi dan akulturasi. Berbagai macam budaya memang menjadikan keanekaragam budaya menjadi lebih indah namu alangkah baiknya kebudayaan - kebudayaan itu tetap dipertahankan dan dilestarikan dan tidak tergeser dengan budaya - budaya asing yang lain.
